RIP baby Jett 07/27/08
Dakota's Nursery

On February 27, 2003 my husband Eddie and I brought home a 7 week old ball of fluff we decided to call 'Demon.' I had never been around Siberian Huskies before. I was raised all my around Dobermans and Rottweilers. Our little Demon was a whole new ballgame! (and still is.) Several people had told us that huskies were like Lays potato chips -you can't have just one. Within the year we realized that silly cliche was true.

Snoop came to us from Madison Oglethorpe Animal Control. I was pretty sure he had some wolf in him very soon after meeting him. (my first clue was his teeth! He is low content, but the older he gets (as with most wolfdogs) the more you wolfie type behavior we see. With Snoop I had to learn a lot fast! And even now I continue learning everyday. He is so smart it is almost scary sometimes.

About a year later I got a call from my young brother in law, telling me he wanted me to have his 7 month old Siberian Husky. I told him that I had my hands full but I would take him and find him a good home. Well not long after I brought Shadow home, my brother in law Paul took his life. That night I decided I would not re-home Shadow. And he has been my 'shadow' ever since.

This year I decided I would get more involved with rescue seeing as I was to be home all the time now. I had just began to really get started when I came across a person that told me her husband was going to take their wolf dog cross Alaskan Malamute and her one remaining puppy and turn them loose in the mountains!

I went to her home, seen the poor creature and baby and knew I couldn’t leave them there! I knew I didn’t have the resources, fencing, and experience to take care of them, but even with my ignorance of high content wolf dogs I knew I had to take them away from there on the spot!

Talk about a learning experience! Honey was amazing, and I was in love. I only had the pleasure of her company for five days before she was found a permanent home close enough by for me to visit and one where she would be with her off-spring for all of their days long! And they would be with other wolf dogs.

In those five days I talked with, and got to know some very special people: WRR people, Wolf dog people, Broken Foot Warrior people, and some of the folks at different wolf dog rescues and sanctuaries. I don’t think I could name them all. I have learnt so much, most from the experience. I know I have a long ways to go and I understand that you never stop learning from these wonderful creatures.

With my first rescue came two things, the need to rescue and help more dogs and the love, respect, and admiration for the wolf dogs and all the rescuer's out there.

Since Honey I have rescued and fostered a few more dogs, even taken in two five week old puppies whose mother was shot. I have traveled within several states of my home state to pick up dogs in need. I have found a wonderful veterinarian that treats wolf dogs and will make house calls if necessary and he runs a small rescue as well and helps me immensely!

At this time we are looking for a larger home with more acreage to further my dream and ambition to help more Siberian Huskies and Wolf-dogs. As soon as this new home is located we will be moving and then we can help more. At this time I do not have proper containment for ‘jumpers’ or ‘diggers’ … my fencing is about a foot in the ground and about 5 & ½ high. The move and new fencing is credited to the 'extra' tax check this year -the one that is literally going to the dogs!

Sincerely,
Becky Wright
